Later Life Ambitions welcomes a more positive stance from the Government regarding the future appointment of an Older People’s Commissioner for England. Given the progress that commissioners have overseen in solidifying the rights of older people in Wales and Northern Ireland since 2008 and 2011 respectively, it is high time that these protections are extended to England. All people in later life in the UK must be afforded the necessary protection from widespread age discrimination in our society with a positive cross-departmental champion to advocate for them across government.
Whilst the Government’s response to the recommendations of the Women and Equalities Committee is encouraging, along with considerations for how older people’s champions might operate, the potential for plans do not go far enough. Later Life Ambitions urges concrete action and a roadmap to establish an Older People’s Commissioner for England, and for clarification on how older people’s champions will directly ensure that the voices of older people are heard in society. The Government’s response to the Women and Equalities Committee report could have addressed the issue comprehensively but has missed a key opportunity.
Alan Lees, Chief Executive of the National Association of Retired Police Officers, said:
“We know from the experience in Wales and Northern Ireland the value an Older People’s Commissioner. That’s why we call on the Government to adopt the findings of cross-party MPs and deliver equity for all older people across the UK. Warm words from Ministers are welcome but we need to see some action including establishing a new framework for promoting and protecting older people’s rights as soon as possible.
“People in later life face many challenges to leading fulfilling independent lives. An Older People’s Commissioner for England can make sure of joined up government in the issues that matter to older people. It’s high time for change. Later Life Ambitions will continue to push for these crucial changes.
