LLA welcomes Centre for Ageing Better report on supporting disabled older workers

Later Life Ambitions (LLA) welcomes the Centre for Ageing Better’s new report, Making Workplaces Work for Everyone: Closing the Gap Between Ambition and Action for Disabled Older Workers. It finds that too many employers recognise the importance of inclusive practices without putting them into effect.

Better workplace adjustments, trained managers and flexible working can help people with disabilities and long-term health conditions remain in employment. Employers should also tackle stigma and involve older disabled workers in shaping the policies intended to assist them.

The report reinforces the case made in LLA’s Budget for Later Life for workplaces that enable older people to remain in employment where they choose to do so. Older workers must also be properly considered as part of wider reforms to employment, ill-health and welfare.

Eamonn Donaghy, Chief Executive of the National Federation of Occupational Pensioners and a spokesperson for LLA, said:

“Good intentions are not enough. Older disabled workers need practical measures that allow them to remain in employment and use their skills.

“Employers and the Government should act on these findings and remove the unnecessary barriers that continue to push people out of the workplace.”
