HOLD THE PHONE: ENSURING EVERY CONSTITUENT CAN REACH THEIR MP
Later Life Ambitions campaigns across the UK to improve the lives of older people – nationally, regionally and locally. With over 250,000 members, many of whom do not use email or social media, the ability to contact their MP by phone is essential.
Despite this, our recent findings show that over 300 MPs do not publicly list a Westminster or constituency phone number.
This is unacceptable.
Almost half of our elected representatives are unreachable by phone: a serious barrier in a democracy where everyone deserves to be heard. With 1.6 million people in the UK living offline, and a quarter of the population struggling to use online services, the digital divide is real and growing.
Older people are disproportionately affected. Around 31% of those aged over 65 do not use the internet at home. But digital exclusion is broader than age. Disability, income, and where someone lives all play a part.
We’re calling on MPs to ensure they can be reached by all constituents. A publicly available phone number is a basic but vital step in closing the communication gap and maintaining access to democracy for everyone.
Together, let’s ensure no one is left behind.
